Big winged beast

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Want to call it a butterfly, but I reckon it is just a really handsome moth...what is it?

Luna moth (family Saturniidae)...

Princeton Junction, NJ

Hi,
It's a luna moth - gorgeous, aren't they!
I am in central NJ & we had one as a caterpillar that grew into the moth.
Did you find it as a caterpillar? They are super fat, lime green, huge caterpillars.

It just showed up this evening at the front door on the door frame.

I'm interested in knowing what plant(s) the caterpillars might feed on. It is a fabulous thing, and I hope I'm growing plants that would encourage more of them to live around here.

Read that this one's larvae feed on Persimmon, Black Walnut, Hickory, Sweetgum, and Sumac. Plenty of those species around the Valley.
