Night Blooming Cereus

Palm Bay, FL

We currently have a Night Blooming Cereus, 18 yrs. old that has branched out and is growing up a slash pine tree and a cabbage palm. We have to remove the pine tree completely, and clean up the palm. 95% of the Night Blooming Cereus will be lost.
I'm thinking of taking cuttings from the NBC and build a trellis or pergola on which the cactus can grow. Has anyone had success in growing a NBC on a structure, as opposed to letting it grow up into a 70' tree? I don't want to lose it, as it has sentimental value. Unfortunately, the destruction begins in the next week or two, so I don't have a lot of time.
Any and all ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Julie

I have cuttings of other Orchid cacti, they are pretty straightforward, but not real fast to get going. Once they have rooted they do grow fast. You should do it- also, if you want the trellis in the same location as the tree you are taking out, it may sprout up even if you remove all the top growth. Cool plant! I sprouted the seeds of a Dragon Fruit I ate, now have seedlings-What the heck will I do with them in Seattle?
They commercially grow Dragon Fruit, on very sturdy trellises. I am a little unclear about the names and genetics, but Dragon fruit is very similar or possibly even the same as NBC. You could google the subject to find out just how sturdy it needs to be. Does yours make fruit?

Thanks Pistil - I believe it does. After it blooms, there is a shriveled-up, redish object left behind. I never did anything with them though, just let them decay. Wasn't sure what they were. They do not look like the picture you posted, though. I appreciate your response.
