What do you think of these???

Lexington, SC

Need first hand info. please.I see these shown "many" times on YouTube.
1-Use of molasses as fertilizer additive. How much and how often for all 3 please.
2-Use of aspirin 1 - 325mg/gal as foliar spray to help plants resist diseases.
3-Baking powder to prevent development of blight.
Have you used any of these and what happened in your garden.Any info. based on experience would be appreciated.
Thanks Rick

Good luck with that.

Well I never tried them. Blackstrap molasses does contain iron, so I suppose if your plant had chlorosis from iron deficiency it might help, but it would be really expensive to get enough there, plus it would likely attract ants and grow mold and such. I would just use Ironite myself, and then go bake some molasses cookies ;-)

The thing with claims like these is that the proponents can usually only offer their own anecdotal claims that they think it works (presumably). However, the claims are not usually backed by any standardized testing which would show whether it's actually effective (and to what degree and in what ways... which then make it possible to venture reasons as to why it is), or actually harmful, or neutral (or in other words, utterly useless though at least not harmful).

By the way, I think the last point - "baking powder to prevent blight" - is a corruption of the use of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) on powdery mildew. (These things get passed around like Chinese whispers.) You can read about it here:

Thanks ALL!!
