Found insect-like thing on leg... What is it?

So right before I took a shower tonight, I noticed a somewhat large dark-colored thing attached to my leg. I initially thought it had to do with acne, and just pulled it off, but upon closer examination, it appeared to be some sort of bug (or part of one). Unfortunately, I threw it away figuring that I would be able to figure out what it was with a few Google searches (which I wasn't), so I don't have any pictures. I'll do my best to describe it to you, though.

It was about 5mm long, mostly a brownish color but with a white tip. There were no legs, head, or any other body segment. It looked like it was either a larvae of some sort or part of a larger bug that broke off. After I pulled it off, the bit of my skin it was stuck to started bleeding slightly. Additionally, the area around it (about 2mm diameter) had turned red as well.

Not sure if I should be worried or not. I couldn't find any information on this thing anywhere. Please help!

The only cause for any worry would be if it had been a tick (see http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6521567755_6f4af265cf_z.jpg for an example), and then only if it had been attached for more than 24 hours.
