Found these today under my porch sofit up high..., question is, are they termites? as they look more like ant to me.... and, are they eating wood? damaging anything?
Winged ants? (or so I\'m thinking) termites? dangerous? to the house that is.
Definitely ants. Note the 'wasp-waist' and the geniculate (elbowed) antennae...
Ok.... well; are they "wood eating" ants?? They've got to be indigenous to Texas or I wouldn't have them. Just wondering if they are harmful to the house.
They do look a bit like carpenter ants; these usually attack wood that already has been damaged, usually by moisture.
How do you get rid of them?
You need to locate their wood source. Something like wet roof sheathing where there has been long term discrete dampness from a leak. They seem to prefer roofs to walls but any wet framing is a candidate.
Edited to add eliminating the wet wood should resolve the problem.
