2016 Ponding
Bonnie,
Glad mother and child are doing well.
Kois are still eating with gusto.
I asked this once before but lost the piece of paper I wrote it on. Maybe you all will have the patience to help me again. I need a water lily that can take cold weather in the winter and will bloom in part shade.
I hope my koi get somewhere near as big as the ones you show above.
Hmmm....I'm not sure but I'll check through some of my old notes to see if I can find one for you. I usually do the tropicals here, because we don't get very cold.
Cleaned out tubbies of plants today because my pavers are fiiiiiiiinally going to get done this weekend, and found a one inch baby koi in one of them! Must have been an egg stuck to water lily leaves. It was a fun little surprise :)
well thanks for searching for me. I usually get some water hyacinths from a lady who has a summer home here. They multiplied this summer but we cannot find a way to save them through the winter. We have a bathroom in the basement and tried floating them in the tub but that didn't work. The basement may be too cold for them. I have traded some weird things of DG, too.
Betty
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL.
Thanks Bonnie! Hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving!
It's been nice chatting with everyone here but I am not renewing this year. Just not enough action on the topics I enjoy.
I'm sorry to hear that Helen. I know several of us are on different facebook pages, so join us there (no membership fees!) There are more people and we call still keep in touch with each other! World of Ponds is one. I'll try to remember the names of the other ones.
Water gardening and koi/goldfish ponds is another.
Thanks. I'll look them up.
I also enjoy those same sights MM.
Is anyone doing anything in particular to their pond for the fall/winter? Mine just gets gunky from the leaves, but I don't turn off the pumps or filtration for the winter like those who's water freezes do.
I leave everything the same with filters and pumps running year round. I also leave the UV light on and I think it helps with flukes and flashing in the early spring. The bulb is worn out by then anyway and I put a new one in each spring. I might do a few partial water changes during the winter. At this point I am still feeding my fish once or possibly twice a day. Its barely gotten cool here in Atlanta.
We had been very lucky as far as temperature in the 40---50s so the well will be turned of next week. will use city water to add to pond every few days, I have a sump pump all winter long.
Have a good Holidays !!!!
Do either of you get freeze overs? Do you ever use pond heaters?
I do not use pond heaters.
I use a sump pump for winter
Happy Holidays!!!
Bonnie, the Wal-mart twins are a danger to your other fish. We bought some from Wal-mart and put them in our pond. They were diseased and killed all our resident fish. We actually had a vet to examine the ones from Wal-mart and told us he had run into this problem before. He even asked us if we bought them at Wal-mart because he had seen this problem before. Better safe than sorry.
I got fish from Petsmart for years without any problem until I had a problem. I bought a very small koi and notice it was sickly within a day. Retrieve it and through some investigation diagnosed a viral problem that is very contagious. I can't remember the name of the pathogen but the fish had bulging eyes. (?) I held my breath for a while and luckily none of my other fish got sick.
So no more from Petsmart. I don't buy anything from Walmart.
