A caterpillar in a tomato

New Plymouth, New Zealand

I would appreciate the ID of the caterpillar feeding in a hole at the stem of a tomato.

Thanks

It's in the family Noctuidae, possibly a tomato fruitworm (Helicoverpa armigera conferta) - see http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4053/4266546845_96525d1f6e_o.jpg for an example. The colouration of this caterpillar is extremely variable.
