Would this be a Common Darter dragonfly(Sympetrum striolatum)?
Found on inside net curtain last night, photographed and released.
CLOSED: Dragonfly ID, please
Sympetrum striolatum is not native to New Zealand. Another possibility is Hemicordulia_australiae, the sentry dragonfly; see http://ketenewplymouth.peoplesnetworknz.info/image_files/0000/0002/9689/Sentry_dragonfly___Hemicordulia_australiae-007.JPG
You also might try locating a copy of the book "The Dragonflies of New Zealand" http://www.cabdirect.org/abstracts/19890593534.html;jsessionid=BD9C66809730EB60BF29E140671A132A
Thank you, Flapdoodle.
I do believe it is an Antipodochlora braueri which is endemic to New Zealand

That was another one I'd considered; should have mentioned it as well... :-(
