Yes, this well timed rain should really help the Wildflowers...I can hardly wait to see the BBs
What are you planting this year?
Bluebonnets grow in really poor soil the bestest... I like the red ones I am seeing advertised
I have really rich soil, they don't seem to do well here.
My soil is terrible, except in the raised gardens. My Wildflowers do best in the unamended soil. That explains a lot.
Mine is a chunk of an old farm, part of why I bought the house was the rich black dirt, not black gumbo, but actual topsoil that didn't get scraped off with a bulldozer and called landscaped. Plus I do add compost. If I could get the grass thinned out on the outer edge I might be able to get bluebonnets to go. But most other wildflowers do ok wherever I scatter them. Blue bonnets come up but never bloom, I think I am sowing the seeds too densely. They get their little leaves, get maybe 4 inch diameter plants, but I have yet to see a bloomspike. I may not water enough
I don't water at all except during the summer, and by then the heat has taken the BBs out. When do you sow your BB seeds?
Soemtimes, BB seeds need to be scarified and then refrigerated before being tossed out. Or at least scarify them with a nail file before tossing them out in the fall.
I buy the seeds scarified and then I toss them out in the fall. : ) I noticed some bloom spikes today.
This year, I think I'm going to toss out some cosmos seeds as well as some zinnia seeds for color during the warmer parts of the summer.
If I plant wildflowers I put the seed out between August and November and let the rains water them, which has not worked out well for drought-ish reasons. This year I put some poppy and larkspur and other hand-collected wildflower seeds in one flowerbed, and they got watered a few times and are doing well IF crowded.
I haven't sown any poppy seeds in about 3 or 4 years, but I've got poppies coming up in my flower bed!
Are they self sown or have they just been sitting there waiting?
I guess they're self sown from last year. I have a whole small baby food jar of poppy seeds if anyone wants some, though.
poppies do a good return on their own, but I gather some seed from them anyway
The wild poppies return every year. This is the first time I didnt sow seeds for Shirley or Ca poppies, guess I'll see if they reseeded. I don't recognize them until they are about to bloom.
Easter will be flowers this year! Not seeing anything here in Pa and northern Ohio, except rain and 60* in and out of the cool nights...
