After planting a PawPaw tree can anyone tell me how many years before zebra swallowtail butterflies could potentially lay eggs on my tree??
Getting caterpillars on PawPaw tree
I don't know if anyone can say. Of course, the bigger they get, and the more pawpaws you already have around you, the better your odds.
do you see zebra swallowtails around? Pawpaws and Z swallowtails look to inhabit every corner of Ohio so that's a good sign.
My home state seems to be surrounded by lots of pawpaws and well within the range of Z swallowtails too. but I've never seen the butterfly in my yard. Pawpaws love really moist sites. Where I have spotted them they are in floodplains, right by rivers or streams. I've seen the butterfly in a state park right by the lake and swamp.
Hi,
Thanks for responding! My PawPaw tree is around 20" tall, so very young. I bought it 2 years ago as a seedling. No I've never seen any Zebras in my yard or ever, but after seeing pictures of them well it inspired me to buy a PawPaw.
I think only time will tell. Also supply flowers for the adults to be attracted to, for nectar, if you haven't already.
I provide lots of coneflowers, zinnias and butterfly bushes :)
Sounds ideal! Good luck!
