Purchased plants arrived when it is cold. Please help!

Carrollton, GA(Zone 7b)

Hey guys,

I recently purchased the below listed varieties online. I sort of thought they would ship during the spring as most of my orders are. Yesterday, I received them. They are VERY nice plants with healthy root systems and plenty of green at the top. These are new varieties for me. I am not sure what to do with them now. It is still cold outside, frost with an occasional freeze. Should I plant them outside for the spring? Should I keep them potted in the garage until it warms up? I have really wanted these for some time now and really want them to survive as they were not cheap and are quite nice examples of each plant. Any advice would be great with people familiar with these. I am in zone 7B.

Hypericum calycinum - St. John's Wort
Gaura lindheimeri 'Rosyjane' - Beeblossom
Gaura lindheimeri 'Crimson Butterflies' - Beeblossom

They came bareroot? But already had leaves? I would plant them now and protect them if it freezes. You can do that with water walls or put a bucket or box over them on cold nights.

Hypericum is hard to kill. A heavy mulch until spring should suffice. Guaras are more tricky. They don't usually appreciate our humid climate for more than a few years. Make sure the guara are in a very well drained situation. They do best on slopes. Ammend the clay.

Thank you both for the kind advice. They were shipped as whole plants and not bareroot. I was finally able to reach the seller and was advised pretty much what you both recommended.

They are now in my gardens with a heavy mulch on all three. The seller did also mention the draining aspect. I used sand to amend the already amended soil. Hoping it will work. I think all of these plants are just beautiful! So hopeful that they will survive and thrive.

I now have a new favorite eBay seller to boot! Even from higher end nurseries, I usually do not receive the quality that these plants have already displayed. Nice, full root systems and very healthy plants!

Thanks again!

Make sure mulch on the guara stays light and is pulled back before rainy spring or it will rot.
