"Think Spring!" Seed Swap SUNDAY Jan 31 2016

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow, that would be so nice if CAM could make an appearance at the swap. So sorry to hear that he truly is moving, though. Thanks, Gita, for the update.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I just experimented by adding Wild Geranium to my All Things Plants (ATP) swap list and including a link to Missouri Botanical Garden's info on it in the comments section. I'm not sure that worked; however, I noticed that one can pull up a photo and other info available in the ATP database by clicking on the plant's name in the swap list and then on "view this plant in our database".

Okay, so clicking on the plant name only brings up additional info if the name is in blue text, and clicking on "view this plant in our database" only brings up a photo if there is one.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I haven't tried Of course I am only bringing castor bean seeds

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

That stinks that Cam has to sell his house. Hopefully he moves up to the Philly area so he'll still be in the MAG. So did he lose his job or is he just looking for something better?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think he has a better opportunity with the same company... he was looking at a couple of possibilities the last time I talked to him, not sure which one panned out. Hope to convince him to join us for lunch on the 31st, even if it is a football Sunday! :-)

(Marta) Frederick, MD

I am planning to attend

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Is the Swap still on? Should it be???
Not sure all this snow will be gone in another 5 days. It will have to be
shoveled out by hand. In my case--my hand.
Many cars are still buried along my street--with a 3'+ mountain of snow
in front of them at the end of their driveways. Thanks to the snow plows.
I can see me not getting out of my house for another 2-3 days.

Here is the house across the street fro me. Note the mailbox--totally buried.
It sits on a 4' pole. His car is also half buried.

Just FYI---

Yes! I will be bringing my usual "Big Box"--freshly filled to the brim.
Those new to the Seed swap--you will love this! It has 65 different seeds in it.
Most seeds in the BOX are 2013 or newer. There are some that are from 2009.
******************************************
I have separated all the vegetable seeds from the Big Box and they will be in the
plastic shoe box. This was done for space reasons in the Big Box. Getting tight!
New to you all seeds will also be in that plastic shoe box.

Newer seeds are:
--Red Crepe Myrtle "Tonto" seed heads
--Indian Tobaco --this just showed up in one of my beds. David ID'd it.
--Giant, Purple Amaranth (the one that grew 10' tall)--like there are a million seeds....
--Very limited amt.--another Amaranth (maybe "cruentus"). This grew in my bed last
summer-- out of nowhere. I hope it dropped a lot of seeds! I first grew this plant
in 2009. Got a seedling from David (not OUR David) at Hart's swap (2008?)
--Crocosmia seeds--new to me too. I just had to gather them...
--"Black Pearl" Ornamental Peppers. (whole heads)
--Fresh crop of Blue Liatris seeds--bags-full !
******************************************
Holly--I will put aside your 2 packets of Hyacinth Beans.
Just know that they are from 2010.
Have to ask who it was at HD that gave me these seeds???
She said that they grow all over in her place--and drop a lot of seed pods.
Maybe i can get you an extended supply....

I will bring a gift or two as well. I always bring some extra.
One gift will be a small plant....not telling.....

Gita, since we have 6 days until the swap and some thawing temps and rain on the way I figured it was too soon to "call" it... if need be, we'll reschedule to another weekend in Feb (not 2/6 or 2/7... just realized that's the weekend Jim is holding down the fort while Joyanna and I go to Wisconsin "to play in the snow" -- not that we need to leave town to do that, now!).

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Major roads are open, and shopping centers have private contractors in line to clear their lots in a timely manner. Since swap is located in a shopping center on a major Frederick MD roadway, my guess is that even now if one can get out of their neighborhood they can make it to the swap location. Unless there is another snowstorm I can't imagine that the issue of rescheduling would arise.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Well--Sally is getting frustrated because her Court has nit yet been plowed.
We talked today. Her SUV is still buried. It better get plowed--or she will not
be getting out. That means--I won't either. Hope they can find the time to
clear the side roads.
I have been digging and digging. But--then the sea of 3' deep snow that was
staring at me was impossible to imagine digging out. I had already been
digging for 2 hours. OUCH! I knew I could not even start on this.

My 2 neighbors behind me drove around and cleared as much as they could
so cars could, at least, get in and out.
OK....That was good--but the dug out driveway was way too narrow for me to
even open my car doors to get out.
Today--I finished widening the driveway so there was room for doors to open.
Now--there is a5' tall mass of snow on my front lawn and everyone elses.

Did you get less than we did here? Just wondering if you got less that
the piles of snow we got here? The News did say that Baltimore and DC were the Epi-Centers of this storm.

1--Here is my driveway--after all I could dig was just around the car.
Al the rest of the snow is 3' deep in front of it. Look across the street where
this man is trying to dig out. You will get the idea.

2--Here is my driveway after my neighbor snow-blowed it just enough for
my car to fit into it. I dug off another 2' or more today to widen the driveway enough
to be able to open my car doors once I drove my car into the driveway.
I ended up doing most of the hand-digging myself. No one else to do it....

Nothing to take lightly! This storm was nasty! I bet the piles of snow will still
be around a month from now... G.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I forgot to say that it is NOT just the roads that are the problem--it is just getting
your car out to drive on the roads. The roads get salted and plowed--
our driveways and access roads do not, THAT is the problem! G.

How have you all dealt with this Please let us know.... G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

As of yesterday late afternoon, we have a path to the Camaro. The 4-wheel-drive is at the end of the drive, at least 100 feet from the house, and it is hard to see how plowed in it might be. Investigating that and creating access to the mailbox will be today's projects. First order of business was continuing to make sure that we could push open the front door as the snow built up. Next were getting food for the birds, and then digging out the heat pump. We had switched over to the emergency heat during the snowfall so that it would not be a problem.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

In the first photo, the mound in the middle is the snow-covered Camaro. The road is visible and plowed.

In the second photo, the mound in front of the shed is David's Subaru.

Lots of digging in our future.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow. Pat and David---your woods are something to deal with!

SO? Which 'mound of snow" will you be driving to the Swap in?
It is just 4 days away...miracles are needed......
All the Highways seem to be functioning here, but the piles of snow that got
pushed to the sides is now the issue. There is nowhere they can put it!
In downtown, they literally have to haul all the snow away by trucks. Glad I don't
live in the city...That is all they are talking about in the news.
Picture all the row-houses and all the space they have is the itsy-bitsy pieces of
ground in front. Can't throw it on the street!!!!! NO!!!
Just heard om radio that there have already been 16 deaths related to snow shoveling.

Everyone--take your time doing this! Rest between shovel-fulls.
G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

At the far left in the first picture, there are 3 trees, 2 of which are rather skinny. The skinny tree that is the 3rd tree in crosses the 4-wheel drive that is at the bottom of the driveway. It looks like it is parked at a slant because of the way the snow blew against it on the left. That's what we will take.

Definitely will take our time as we shovel. My brother was living in Boston last year and experienced all their snow. Come spring, he was so pleased when his patio set came into view again. It is a challenge trying to find a place to put it all when it is plowed or shoveled.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Everybody, please check in Friday night and let us know if you are still snow-bound or not.

The way things look now, I think the swap will probably NOT be postponed. But we'll wait until tomorrow night to make a final evaluation.

Pat, I think Terri should be plowed out soon, so if you and David still have stuck cars let her know -- likely she can give you a lift.

We got back yesterday afternoon from a trip to Florida... took the auto train down, expecting to return on the Saturday overnight train... obviously that was cancelled! So we had an extra day at Disney World and then went to Daytona for 2 nights. I know everybody feels so bad that we were "snowed in" like that. Not!

Anyway, that's why I've been absent more than not the past couple of weeks... and I don't post in public that we're out of town, although I know most of you probably figure it out when I go all vague like that LOL.

Joyanna and i will look at seed lists tonight, and tomorrow we'll get goodie bags, gift table stuff, and "free to good home" seeds ready.

I'll also go increase the multiplier to some high number to make sure everybody can get their dibs in by tomorrow. :-)

Thumbnail by critterologist
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It does look like any unused dibs "roll over" to the next day so that many of us have 50+ things we can request using the seed swaps tool at ATP. It's set up very simply; if you enter even 1 seed on your list using the steps I outlined near the top of this thread, you'll be able to follow along and be using the tool in no time.

Scrambling to get things in order for the swap now that I'm home...

I wanted to see if we could put together a spring order of LILIES LILIES LILIES (and maybe some Dahlias) from Ednie, maybe establish some of the varieties we're interested in so we can talk about them on Sunday... To ensure access by all our Mid-Atlantic friends in both DG and ATP, I've put the thread in my "MAG Group Buys" forum on Cubits. If interested, please go here: http://cubits.org/crittercorner/thread/view/83489/ Thanks!

Washington, DC

Found link confounding. Yes, I would like to order lilies. Looking forward to seeing you Sunday.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Can we just have a Seed Swap the way it used to be?

For those of us who did not take part in the ATP Swap rules--it has left me
nowhere to talk about haves and wants and all the discussions we used to have.
There probably are several people who have not gone over to the regimented
rules this Swap has turned into.
There has not been much discussion anywhere on the haves and wants like it
used to be. I really miss all that. WHY do we have to Have all these new formats
that have been presented by the ATP way of Swapping by Jill?...
Not all of us "get it"! I don't. Do YOU get it?
Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Down, girl! We're trying the new tool because it looked like a good alternative to the haves/wants lists... if it didn't seem to be working for the most part, we would have switched back to our previous approach. If you want to post a list of haves/wants, that's fine... but you've repeatedly said you are just going to bring The Box and not list anything ahead of time... and that's fine, too.

Lisa, thanks for letting me know the link didn't work right... i will check to see that I have that forum set up the way it needs to be. If I can't get it working, I'll just post a followup thread in the DG group buy forum. Either way, we'll get our lilies! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lisa, I think I now have my Cubit permissions set up so anybody can view threads in the MAG group buys forum I created. However, it looks like you might have to join Cubits in order to post... hopefully you can now click on the above link, view the thread, and find some sort of a "join" link at the bottom. Trying to do this in a way that includes those who are no longer DG subscribers (only subscribers can access the group buys forum; I think it might even be invisible to non-subscribing members) might be more confusing than its worth... worse than trying to remember if I was on the DG or the ATP threads for this swap! :-)

Don't worry, we'll work something out.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Catmint said she was now able to access that page on Cubits. Although it's "my" mini-website, it's seldom used and totally non-profit (the group buy forum is the only "public" page, so I'm not concerned about posting a link to it. I got confused enough with the 2 sets of threads for this swap... didn't want to try having threads on 2 different group buy forums!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Have a great seed swap, eat lots of good food, enjoy each others company and take some pictures!

Just finished my paper route and I'm beat.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

You were missed!!!

Food was great, but the people were the best. Thanks everyone for welcoming my niece, Tara, with open arms. She had a wonderful time. We stopped at her daughter's place in Towson for dinner, so that was the icing on the cake.

It was wonderful to see you all.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Did you manage to eat any dinner? LOL

Tara is a delight! I'm looking forward to getting to know her (and her gardens) better on the forums. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

YES! Tara and I really hit it off....I may just have to take the trip in summer to
go see her gardens,
The food was awesome! Maybe we should always hold the Swap on Sundays.
Thank you for making the place look pretty, Jill. You did a good job.

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Gita! I had good help, getting those decorations up lickety-split! Joyanna was our chief tape-dispenser, making 1 roll of tape go around for several different tasks. :-)

Joyanna was pretty subdued yesterday... I think she's still coming down off her Disney high... she was sure dragging her feet this morning!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I'd be coming down off a Disney high, too. Hehehehe

Actually I was proud of myself. I didn't make a zillion trips to the buffet. Had some appetizery things, then I had the hibachi grill guy fix my plate. Oh, and then some dessert. But, I could have really gone to town. It was all sooo very good.

Greta had some fruit and cheese and tomato and mozzarella horsdoeuvres. Then she fixed spaghetti squash lasagna. Actually very light. It was yummy!

Gita, you should go visit her.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jan---

Greta? Sorry--but I cannot place her at this time???
Which one was she?

I really, really liked Tara. She is so easy to like. So enthusiastic!
Such a big gardener and all the other stuff. I gave her my address, my e-mail.
address and phone #. Hope we can keep in touch.
Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I made spaghetti squash a couple nights ago and really loved it. Cut in half and baked (cut side down on lightly oiled sheet) 40 minutes at 350'F, then raked squash strands out with a fork... tossed around a bit in a very hot skillet with a little olive oil, butter, and garlic. I saw a recipe for using it in a lasagna-style bake but was unsure if it would just get soggy and nasty... good to know that's a workable idea!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Jan. I missed you all too. Will just have to do double hugs in the Spring!
Hope your niece Tara will come to that swap also, she zsounds like someone I would like to meet.

So glad Sallyg and Catmint posted some pictures. Jeff is glowing as much as Darcy! Yea for MAF aunties and uncles.

Jill, thanks again for hosting the Seed Swap. It has become one of my favorite 'signs of Spring'!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It's definitely a "Think Spring!!" event for me. :-)

HAPPY GROUNDHOG'S DAY!!

Time for winter sowing. :-)

adding... introduction to winter sowing in today's article! http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/585/

I still do it pretty much the same way. although sometimes I cut the top off my milk jug in spring in such a way as to leave the handle attached... easier to move the containers around until I'm ready to plant out.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Gita, Tara's daughter, Greta, lives in Towson. She is a NICU nurse at the U of Md hospital in downtown Bmore.

Tara really is a gem. She takes after me....Hehehehehe. I just crack myself up sometimes. She is very passionate about many things.

Think spring? You bet. I'm ready

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Jan--you ARE a Gem too--and it seems to run in the family..

I really should see Greta as I have a box-fill of small baby hats I knitted
years ago. Always wanted to drop them off at my closest hospital--Franklin Square,
but have never gotten around to it.

I really do not want to drive downtown. Where does Greta live in Towson?
Please D-mail me with her info--as well as her phone#. Or mail it to me--
Tara has my info.
Thanks. Gita

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I don't have Greta's info, but I'm sure Tara would be glad to pick them up sometime when she goes down to see Greta. I think she is going down in a couple of weeks.
