The wood door from our garage leads to the side yard, and was beat up quite badly by previous owners and their big dogs. The bottom panel has warped and come off completely, and the door frame is pretty rotted. The situation can only be fixed permanently by replacing the entire frame and door, which is a bit pricey at this point. Our rainy/windy season here in Sacramento, CA is starting, and I need a reasonable temporary fix to keep the water out. Any ideas? I'm not very handy but not afraid of getting dirty!!
Side door of garage is trashed - need rain-proofing ideas
I don't see how a door will keep water out if lack of gutters or back flow are an issue. The problem is probably long standing. I'd look for a thin plastic composite that could be easily affixed to the outside and replace the door with an alternative when able. The previous owners and their dogs did a number but did not cause the rot.
Hi boofish1,
I was born and raised in Sacramento and I'm trying to remember the windy/rainy season. I think we just called it winter. Your door must face west and/or north to catch that much weather. When you do replace it, I would look in to a metal or fiberglass door. In the mean time.... can you get it closed? If so, maybe fix the bottom with a scrap of plywood. If not, cover the entire opening with plywood and plastic sheeting.
Thanks!
