Before I kill off the last sprig of the plant I forgot to water, how do I root this? Cup of water on counter failing

usually a pretty easy plant; maybe rot has entered the stem

ok, dumped water, started with clean stems and lightly dropped on, lightly covered in pot of slightly damp potting soil sprinkled with cinnamon. If I fail, I only spent 50 cents on the plant and this time made it about 18 months.
