Hello,
I have a covered deck with a skylight at the top. These flies have been swarming around the skylight since the fall. I thought they were mosquitos but they don't have a proboscis and it's very cold here right now. I live in Portland, OR.
Does anyone know what they are?

These appear to be fungus gnats in the family Mycetophilidae - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/gnats_mycetophilidae for some examples. Their larvae sometimes are found in the waterlogged soil of potted plants.
