I just ordered a about a 4 foot Kwanzan Cherry how long until I see blooms.
How old could a 4 foot bareroot be. What age do these trees have to be for them to flower.
Kwanzan Cherry Question
Your tree is at least 3 - 4 years old. Most of those years were spent growing the rootstock, usually a wild cherry. The Kwanzan Cherry branch (or branches) is grafted at the top of the rootstock trunk (anywhere from 2 - 7 feet, depending upon the intended use. The shorter grafts are for garden use, the taller ones for street tree use). As the rootstock is vigorous, it will try to grow its own branches below the graft - don't let that happen. Rub off all the buds below the graft.
Your tree should have at least a couple flowers next spring. As the tree grows and matures, the flowers will get more numerous and prettier. Don't worry if the flowers don't look quite right for the first couple years.
I think the biggest drawback with a Kwanzan Cherry is that they don't live very long.
Thankyou.
