CLOSED: round insect that looks like lichen

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

This looks like a bit of lichen to me, but it's an insect I saw near Hilton Head, South Carolina in early November. We flipped it over in an attempt to get a photo of its underside, but it flipped over again too quickly. Any ideas as to what it might be?

I'll try to find a clearer photo of it.

I hope these are better.

It is pretty amazing, isn't it?

I wonder if this is what is destroying my asparagus ferns or if it's something else.

These are mealybugs, sap-sucking relatives of aphids. I see that you have started a new thread for these...
