Planting shampoo ginger rhizome

Milton, FL

Hi, I planted a shampoo ginger (zingiber zerumbet) rhizome in a container about 4 inches in depth about 6 weeks ago and nothing has sprouted. I am anxious to have this plant succeed but am worried something is wrong at this point. I have been keeping the soil moist but not boggy and in plenty of sun light. How long should it take to see growth at the surface? Thanks!

Ginger rhizomes should be planted just under the soil surface and never more than an inch deep. If you planted it 4 inches down, it might be struggling to get to the surface or it may have rotted. Carefully remove soil until the top of the rhizome is exposed. That way, you can check on its health without taking it out of the pot.

If it's still alive, I would lift it (and its root ball) gently towards the surface and fill in below.

Ok, that makes sense; that's what I'll do. Thank you so much for your response!
How do I know if it is rotted? Will it be obvious?

Solid with pink growing tips vs. mushy and brown.
