raising crayfish

Anyone tried to raise crayfish/crawdads in a backyard pond? I'm be interested in some feedback anyone can share?

Might need more aeration than typical backyard pond. I used to find them in small shallow pebbly streams. Are they farm raised down South?

They need well aerated clean water. That's why Sally found them in shallow pebbly streams. If your pond is large and you have something keeping the water moving so it gets aerated, it might work.

Sally, is Pennsylvania considered the south in Maryland?

no, Pennsylvania is all north of Maryland. Just that I think of the South as the big crawdad territory. And if so, there might be advice from Universities down there for 'farmers'

I used to raise them in the creek that feeds my 1/2 acre pond. It's actually the ovetflow from the spring tank down into the pond; a few hundred feet. I also grew water chestnuts and watercress along that same rivulet. They (crawdads) live in muddy shallows. Most artificial ponds have steep edges. Is there a question about raising them? Mine lived but didn't proliferate. Water chestnuts are apparently not hardy but the cress did great.

Slippery slopes: crawdaddies need a way to get out of the water. They use so much oxygen that if their watery home doesn't have enough, they crawl out of the water to get more.
