Wintering geraniums

Crockett, VA

I live in Virginia and was told you can shake the dirt off , prune and then tie geraniums up and hang them upside down in a dark place for the winter. Come spring you can soak the roots and put them in soil. I do not have a place to bring them all in and they get leggy. Can you preserve them this way?

I had a bout of giggles when I read you post but... I guess it's not as crazy as it sounds. Read on:

My Mom had a few dozen red geraniums (pelargoniums) she kept on the deck fence for years. Her DH figured out a way to keep them on the porch over the winter. They were kept in plastic pots that were really too small for them. In fall, they were pruned down to stubs, and crammed on shelves on the front porch, that had windows facing east and south. They put a little 20$ milk barn heater there to keep it barely above freezing. Some were under other shelves so got almost no light., but others got a bit of light through the windows, and they made some growth over the winter, and would even bloom there! They were all kept terribly dry, often watered only when I visited every few weeks or month. Done this way, many pots fit in a small space, and there was little 'legginess'. In spring they were repotted and pruned if needed, put out on the fence.
I think geraniums are really tough, this might work. I would probably give them water once a month.

I also lived in Zone 8 (in California) and I never took mine in at all. They were planted in the garden and cut down to nubs in the winter but always came back in the spring.

Tizer88 lives in Zone 6 - it gets down into minus numbers in Zone 6. The geraniums will be toast.
