I think this is Liquidambar styraciflua, immature green seed capsules..
At the park today, sunny and 70 degrees.
Sweetgum in the fall
Yep, Liquidambar styraciflua is correct :-)
Resin
Beautiful fall color tree; too bad the spiky pods and the surface roots make it bad for a yard tree. We have lots in the wild though.
I agree Sally, I always wanted this one and the spiky pods are a real treat to look at but not much fun to step on.
I have a seedless Sweetgum. It's the 'Happidaze' variety. Occasionally it will get a seed or two but no big deal. Ours has decent color but nothing like that. It's usually different from year to year. This year it has featured yellow and green fall color.
As children, we would gather the spiky pods, spray paint them gold or silver, and throw them onto the Christmas tree-so fun to see them "stick".
Hey, that sounds like fun...even for supposed adults...he he.
Seedless would be so much better than those ankle busting gumballs!
