I have seen several of these small insects in my home this fall. When angered, they wiggle their butt and curve it upwards like they are trying to sting you. They have wings but I have not seen them fly. I live in Missouri.

It's a rove beetle (family Staphylinidae), a general predator on other small arthropods.
