ID Help: Insects on stump near Vancouver

Cranbrook, Canada

These were seen on the Sunshine Coast which is just a bit NW of Vancouver, Canada.

I was wondering:
1) What they are.
2) What is with the odd specimen in there which is significantly larger than the others? Or is that a seperate species?
Bonus questions:
3) What types of ants are those red ones in there?
4) What might they all be doing and feeding on?

Thanks in advance!

These are ants not termites, you can see the constricted abdomen on some of them. The smaller black ones likely all are males and the larger paler ones queens (reproductive females). Among some insects, it is not at all uncommon to see large numbers of males competing for the attention of relatively few females...

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to figure out what species from this list:

Couldn't do it. I also didn't seem to have any luck in researching "winged ants of British Columbia" online. I may head down to the library too. In the meantime, is there any narrowing down of species that you know of?

Sorry to bump this quite old thread. But I never did narrow down what species this might be. Someone said carpenter ants possibly - but when I looked up all the carpenter ants on this list

http://ibis.geog.ubc.ca/biodiversity/efauna/documents/AntsofBCHigginsLIndgren2008.pdf

nothing made any mention of being winged ants. This is my last ditch attempt to get a better idea what they are. : ) Thanks in advance as always...
