I have some open pollinated zinnas that I want to save the seeds from.
Where are the seeds, the petals?
Saving Zinna seeds
at the base of the petal after the flower has dried, if you pull on a petal it will come out with a pointed seed as its base. That is the seed. I wait until flowers are dry and refrigerate mine in an envelope.
Thank you
Is that true of marigolds too?
Marigold heads that are allowed to dry on the plant will have mature seeds. You can just collect the heads that are brown, on a dry afternoon, and put on a table, maybe on a piece of white paper in NO WIND. Pull on the petals. The seed of marigold is black and usually about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long depending on bloom size, and they should all come out. Put in an envelope, I refrigerate mine but just keeping cool and dry should do.
Thank you, gypsy. I had pulled some seed heads off and they're drying on a plate – and have them for about a month. I'll go check them now. Thank you again!
