Need protective fence for thorned tree

Eustis, FL

I've planted a floss silk tree in the backyard to serve as a visual focal point from the lanai. I need some type of fence protection around the trunk to prevent our grandkids from injury. There are some nice wrought iron guards out there but I do not know what they are called. Is there a specific name for this device?

Thanks

Cool tree! Wrought iron tree guard?

Wrought iron they be but alas they be woe unto me purse strings! Looks like I will have to redneck this one. Think I will go 4x4's on the corners with decorative caps and some fancy grillwork in between. All pressure treated to defeat those nefarious chompers of wood, the termites~G!

Not only is wrought iron expensive but the upkeep is a nightmare. Your idea sounds good to me. My redneck take would be your 4x4's and some fancy chicken wire. 8')

Kids grow up. Will you consider plain old chicken wire in a circle round the tree? Painted black it disappears. You can decorate it too with a plaster garden face or two....or a plant pocket or two.....garden trowels and other small tools....small mirrors glued on.....or just hang 'em on. When the kids are old enough to be safe - take it down.

This would only need to be temporary, for the little kids-so how about a trellis around the base:

Well have checked out the above possibilities and A. My wife is a chicken wire hating diva, so no chicken wire. B. The little black thingie from ACE hardware is too small and it would require at least 3 of those to prevent little hands and arms from reaching the trunk in addition to the cost for 3 which is over $120. So will go with 4X4's just sitting on the ground, with 2x4' supports top and bottom interspersed with 1x2's in a vertical configuration every 6 inches or so. The two feet of separation from the trunk to the outside edge will prevent contact and I can buy a gallon of fence white for $14 at WalMart. Any pre construction suggestions?

Cedar or rot proof. When digging post hole..careful of roots. Paint it before you erect it. Black would enhance tree better and not be so "in your face" as compared to white unless whilte is esthetic choice with surroundings. You could use a stain which for me is easier than paint. Your wife ain't seen decked out fancified dog wire! It can be artsy with stuff on it. 😊

Edited to fix spelling and to say choose non rusting mails or screws.

Cedar is too expensive down here and most lumber is pressure treated pine to keep out the termites and other nasties.

I hate nasties!

I think with a little imagination and a skill saw, you could build a funky cool fence that even Diva's would love. I am visualizing a ginger-bread style picket fence... A little white paint would make it rock.

OR.... How about a wattle fence? You can go vertical or horizontal and natural all at the same time.

Your latest plan sounds fine to me. If they're too little to understand 'dont force your way in and touch sharp things', you will be supervising them closely. Me, personally, your level of concern makes me think you'll supervise quite well enough anyway. This is just more peace of mind. and maybe to avoid when kids are actively running and might crash into it.
