My son and I love spiders. We pick up jumping spiders and smaller wolf spiders all the time. There are several Spotted Orb Weavers around the house. One lives on my truck. She comes out at night and spins her web, and retreats in the morning to an open end of a pipe on my ladder rack. She's lived there for a couple of months. Are the Orb Weavers similar in nature to a Tarantula? What I mean is a pet Tarantula can be handled as long as it's being handled gently and no abrupt moves are made. It won't bite you. Would an Orb Weaver react similarly? I'd like to pick one up. We'll pet the back of the spiders often, but they run to the edge of their web.
Picking up Spiders
Never mind, I found my answer. Apparently Orb Weavers are not aggressive. I just watched a few videos of people picking them up. Maybe we'll pick Charlotte (spider that lives on my truck) up tonight and let her crawl around on our hands.
It's always good to see people who appreciate spiders. The only time I've held any is when I release them outside. But I leave them, if I cannot reach them. My husband is starting to appreciate them, now that he knows they all don't bite.
We had a Orb Weaver outside one window, who would come out in the evening. We never found her daytime spot. I am seeing a lot of writing spiders around the property. Those are probably the largest spiders I've ever seen.
If you want to share photos and experiences, there's not a specific forum for insects and spiders except for ID and pest. I've been posting mine over at the wildlife forum. It would be nice to have another join in.

Thanks for the response. I'll certainly post some pictures over there. We have quite a few pictures of the Orb Weavers and Jumping spiders (they are my favorite, they have such a cute face). Like I said, we really love the spiders. We'll often sit out on our deck in the evening and have a spider spinning a web a few feet away. They are really neat to watch. Great natural bug control.
