This was found by my wife in our yard and then cared for tenderly by my daughter for a few minutes. What do we have here?

This is a female blister beetle in the genus Meloe. Commonly known as oil beetles, their bodily fluids can cause blistering of tender skin - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meloe
