CLOSED: Brown orange worm that eats bulbs

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7a)

2 years ago I planted 100's of canna bulbs, intending to surprise my aging mother with a gorgeous array of multiple colors in her favorite flower, the canna lily. I also added 75 gladiolus to the mix. I set up 4 beds. One, on the east side, one on the west side, one on the south east side, and finally one on the northeast side of the house. When our season of bloom began here in Virginia, zone 7, it was an amazing sight. No matter where mom looked, the canna were visible to her. As summer went on I noticed the infamous leaf rollers had come calling. They did a fair amount of damage, but nothing was destroyed. I treated, cut, disposed and so on , just like I was instructed. Come winter I cut everything back, low to the ground and gave them one last blast of herbicide to be safe. All was bagged up and disposed of, just like instructed. This year I noticed virtually nothing coming up. One bed was gone completely, one bed 5 canna came up along with 1 glad. Another bed was also completely vacant of any canna and glads. I began digging into the soil and discovered this disgusting brown mush. The more I dug, the more mush appeared. Once I was able to locate existing bulbs I dug them up. Even my calla lilies were eaten. Both ends of the tubers were black, brown, or mushy. I opened up the centers and found a bright brown orange worm. Some bulbs were completely black and dead. In every bed I dug, I found this same type of worm. At the time I didn't think to get a picture. I researched everywhere I could think. Nothing came up, even "bulb eating worm" resulted in no information. I need to find out if this is a canna thing or possibly something in my soil. I am getting ready to plant for fall and I am nervous at best.

a blast of herbicide probably killed the plants and perhaps the worms/cats were just feeding on the remnants...just a thought.
you really don't have to go to all that trouble with cannas. just spray with Bt or spinosad product (both organic). the rollers and any other worms/cats will eat the treated leaves and die. at the end of the season, just cut them back.
if you had a particularly cold and/or rainy winter, it's possible that the cannas just died due to cold/wet soil but the herbicide sure didn't help.

Thanks for the feed friend. No bad wet winter. Bt did not handle my rollers. These suckers were just too resilient. Had to get out the big guns. Herbicide did not kill plants. I cut them back and lands alive they are coming up like wild things. I had to really get nasty with the worm. I think I got him cause all the canna I have are flourishing like mad. No sign of any pests. I hated to go chemical. I had been so fortunate and faithful with organics until now. I had a huge garden and didn't have a single problem. It was just my bulb babies that were tortured. When winter comes and I cut back all green foliage I will give it another blast of this pesticide and look forward to many beautiful bulbs to treasure next season.
