I carried ferns from the woods in PA to Illinois but they died. However, the pots they are in are now showing life. I really want these to make it, so how should I overwinter? Thank you.
Overwintering baby fern
Have you considered simply planting them out where you want them to grow? They're hardy ferns (given where you said they were collected), and whether the "signs of life" you're seeing are gametophytes/sporophytes (proto-plants or slightly more developed plants generated from spores) or new plants arising from rhizomes, it's exactly the same as how ferns would propagate themselves in the wild or in a planting in your garden.
