CLOSED: Can you identify this insect?

Upland, CA

I'm pretty sure it's a squash beetle, but I could be wrong and I want to get feedback from all of you who have better knowledge. I know the photo isn't very detailed, but I'd really appreciate it if you would let me know what you think it is? Thank you for your help! -Ella

Where did you find it? Was it on any type of squash, cucumber, pumpkin or melon?

It was found inside the house of a friend, on his wall. His neighbors, so I'm told, have a garden with several vegetables growing, including squash. -Ella

This appears to be Largus californicus, a bordered plant bug in the family Largidae - http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=11001

Hi Flapdoodle:

While the insect on the link you provided didn't look anything like the insect on the photo I showed you, I did google "bordered plant bug" and the ones shown there are exactly like the insect shown on my photo. I guess they come an a variety of shapes and colors. Thank you so much for your help. Now I know what this insect is! -Ella

The second image at that link looks very much like your specimen; the nymphs of this species (first image) appear very different from the adults...

Yes, it does! Thanx again! :) -Ella

One last question: Flapdoodle; are you an entomologist?
