Lexington, MA

Hello All
We just moved into our inlaws former home that we bought off them.
We noticed quite a few hairy spiders throughout the house, most being in the upstairs bedrooms
My sister inlaw luved here at one time and had quite a few pet spiders. We
We are wondering if these might be offspring of her pets
pets
We lived in Massachusetts our whole lives and never saw hairy spiders like these
Can someone please help us identify the spider and let us know if they are venomous
Thanks for your help

I think these are what I have referred to as a Wolf Spider, or Jumping Spider. I may certainly have the names wrong, so do not lock into just these possibilities. Also, the spiders I see here in CA are probably different species than what you are seeing in MA.

Large, forward eyes, and no web. Legs and all, not much larger than a dime, maybe a bit bigger.

What size are these guys?

I just catch spiders in a glass and set them outside the house.

I would lean toward the Tan Jumping Spider, Platycryptus undatus. Or a similar jumping spider. These belong to the eastern portion of the US. And are not harmful to humans.

As far as being venomous, most, if not all, spiders are, but very few can break the human skin. The ones that can are the Recluse and the Widows.

I take spiders out for the most part, but there's one in the kitchen eating flies, so I leave it alone for now. Did your sister in law have tarantulas?

Wolf spiders are a different family and not quite as cute. :) At least in my opinion. I think the tan jumping have sweet fuzzy faces. http://bugguide.net/node/view/404723
