Lisa, I bet the reason for the accuracy of the Swedish website is that it uses the European model, which is embarrassingly superior to the GFS North American model in predicting North American weather.
I personally would prefer the expertise of the local weather forecasters who are familiar with the quirks of DC weather, where snow/rain line prediction can be quite tricky.
I deep watered the shrubs again yesterday. I'm not counting on this rain at all. Muddy, you might have better luck with this system since it's concentrated in the south.
Yardening- almost September 2015
Where did that beautiful weather model go ?? Bring her back !! Down to 40% chance tomorrow and Monday. Dammit, that is one homely model !
Jeff, I came across a fab plant place here in Lititz. It's Longview Nursery on Hackman Rd. Likely you know the place. This weekend they're having a sale. Shrubs are $5.97. Bought a Gibraltar azalea, Burkwoodii viburnum, clethra and Itea for $25!
Well done, Lisa! You definitely belong in our group. Hope you got some yummy food on your outing as well.
What fantastic prices you found! I went over board with the mail order over the winter and hardly made it to any local nurseries this season. I was hoping to catch some good end of season sales, but so far, nada.
Wow, I've never heard of that place before! Sounds like a good deal. How'd you end up there anyway?
CAM, I'm telling ya, it ain't gonna rain. The homely one is here to stay :(
how in the heck can I wash my neck, if it ain't gonna rain no more?
It's cloudy, breezy and cool here, it might as well rain because there is nothing luring me outside.
Nope, Jeff.... that system didn't bring any rain to us but did rain just to our west this morning, just to our south yesterday. Some of our group likely got some. And south central PA is going to get some but will miss you too.
But take a look at the new 10 day forecast This week looks cloudy, cool, and rainy !
With no rain yesterday and this morning, I was able to plant the NE Asters and Peonies I got at the swap so now all the plants and bulbs from the swap are in the ground. Also planted some other stuff I bought.. two Peonies Kansas flanking one Peony Festiva Maxima, the three Pink Muhlly Grasses, and the Wonder Willow shrub.
To finish off the bed right in front of my sidewalk, I just ordered two Astilbe "Ostrich Plume" to flank that area. In between them, I ordered 5 Pewter Lace Ferns, 3 Veronica "Icicles", and two Heuchera "Glitter".
I decided to mulch 1/3 of my front yard. Grass simply won't grow there -- dry shade, surface tree roots, and voles, the worst combination for grass. I've overseeded twice with no luck. I'm not sure what/if I'll be planting anything there, but the mulch already looks *so much better* than bare dirt and spotty weeds.
No rain here! When the models were rerun on Friday, the GFS said we'd get over an inch whereas the Euro said we'd get barely a quarter inch.
Sadly, the Euro was right again.
Cam, Sounds very nice. I seriously want to see your gardens.
Sounds like a good flower plan CAM. It sure is hard planting all that stuff and not getting any help from ma nature.
Sally don't you guys have a shower in the bathroom where you can wash your neck? LOL
SSG there are some Carex varieties that love dry shade. Maybe you check some of those out for your new mulch bed.
Thanks, Jeff... I think those plants in combination will look great and I'm already anxious for next Spring to see everything come back and begin to mature. :)
Holly... You and Ric are welcome at any time. Next Spring might be best though... many of the plants I'm putting in now are very small. In fact, I'm never buying from Spring Hill Nurseries again because they sent such tiny specimens. I replaced some of their plug sized plants with gallon sized ones. By next Spring, my beds should be filling in and looking pretty good. :) Of course, Dover isn't all that far away so you can come as often as you feel like making the drive. :)
Really nice weather for yardening, but there is some nasty bug out there biting the heck out of me. I can't see them, so I am just calling the pesky things no-seeums, whether that is what they are or not. I finally came inside and feel like they are still biting me - all around my face, hairline, and neck. Got a lot done though!
Mike and I made a new planting bed around a mature weigela shrub in the side yard. Years and years ago on a garden tour, I saw a combination planting of weigela and Siberian iris that I have always wanted to duplicate. Well, the weigela was already there, and thanks to newbie Lisa I now have a lot of Siberian iris to plant in front of it. I picked up one clump during the swap, and then during the cleanup I took the clumps that were left. Also, I had bags and bags of bearded iris rhizomes from a friend at work who is big time into iris and daylilies and was thinning out his gardens. We got 5 yards of topsoil this morning and got that dumped.
and spread out, and I got all the iris planted. What a job, and now another bed to weed and mulch, like I can ever keep up with what I already have LOL.
The named bearded iris that Dan from work gave me are Victoria Falls, Ice, Batik, Pink Perfection, and Peach Royale. He also gave me some he just calls Early Purple and Foundling, and then another bunch of rhizomes that were mixed together. Each kind that he gave me had anywhere from 10 - 25 rhizomes. Should have some to share in spring if they make it through the winter ok.
Thanks Cam I would love that. No you aren't far.
Sounds fantastic aspenhill. I am glad you got some great planting time in. It is not such an ugly day after all.
Ugghh... not clear enough to see the super moon and not stormy enough for it to rain. :(
Ditto. We are on the deck. Clouds are open overhead.but we can't see anything of the m.. no wait Mark spotted it!
Glad you all got your planting done.
The clouds cleared enough to watch the moon tonight. It was pretty spectacular through binoculars.
Sounds like a lot of work Aspen, looking forward to seeing it next spring though!
I went to bed around 1015 and it was cloudy :-( I guess I'll have to wait another 30 years. If I don't see it then, I'll never see it. Geez...30 years from now I'll be 62! I got up for the bathroom around 1 and the moon was beating its rays down. Figures. I saw some pics on TWC this morning and it did look pretty cool.
I missed whatever this thing (The Super Moon) was about.
What was so special???? G.
Supermoon is the full moon when the moon is at its closest to Earth. It's some 30,000 miles closer to Earth than normal. This is due to it having a less than round orbit around Earth. This supermoon coincided with a lunar eclipse. The last time this happened was 1982. We would have been able to see it really well too but, at least at my house, it was cloudy.
another supermoon (no eclipse, just super) later in October. 27th?
Apparently it cleared up later in the evening. I like living this close to the city, but I do miss the stars and a wide open field for gazing at the night sky.
We were *so close* to getting a bit of that rain: https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2015/09/28/heavy-rain-completely-bypassed-d-c-this-weekend-why-did-we-miss-out/
Anybody wanting rain ? Look at the next week's forecast. Here are the rain percentages each day for me, bet yours are similar:
100
50
40
80

Should be some rain in there somewhere. :)
For me it varies between the days. I'm looking at:

Also sweet numbers, Jeff. Cool and rainy... newly planted flowers and perennials should love it. Of course, also means we'll be back to mowing grass every five days again.
I don't know, I like slackin' on the grass. I used to enjoy cutting it but now that there are so many gardens about, it's hard to put down the nice lines that I like. Also, the fertilizer companies still haven't been able to get all the weeds out the lawn. That darned Oxalis grows like wildfire. I'd rather just have more gardens with grass paths between.
I checked the GFS weather model and it says we're only going to get a 1/2" over the next two days but if we get that tropical moisture from Tropical Storm Joaquin, then we could get dumped on this weekend.
Aspenhill (or anyone else), let me know if you want more Siberian Irises; I have lots that need to be divided.
We've had almost an inch of rain today and it's still coming down. Judging from the forecast, we might get 10" by Sunday. As long as it's fairly slow and steady, it's welcome; torrential downpours I could do without.
I'm LOVING this rain. :) Yippee!
Yes, this is a perfect rain coming down... steady but not so hard it washes mulch away. Been raining steady for three hours and at least two more hours to go. More coming in the next week, too.
Today--we are having a VERY slow, drizzly rain ..too light to really soak anything.
BUT--better than nothing....If it keeps up--I think it will be of some benefit.
Maybe tonight, it will get heavier. The forecast has been the same---
"Chances of rain"......Chances of rain.....Chances of rain....

Muddy, how tall/what color are these irises?
I don't think I've ever grown siberian irises before. How do they handle part sun and dry soil?
I got one bunch of these iris also.
Need to Google to see what they look like.....

Gita
They are about 2' tall and the flowers are dark purple. I don't have a photo, but the DG ones look about right: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/157488/
The plants themselves will grow in any amount of light; at times I've stuck them in full shade just to control erosion. I can't say for sure how well they bloom in less than full sun, but it might be worth a try especially if you fertilize them (which I never do). I've given mine a little supplemental water this summer, but I think they handle dry conditions fairly well.
Thanks, Muddy, I'd love some!
We have about 0.2" so far. Not much but it is a nice soaking rain. The radar shows some heavier stuff on the way over night.
If you get what we're getting, you are in for about 3 inches.
Nice, I'll take it. I'm liking what I'm seeing for the weekend. We might have a hurricane on our hands.
It is dumping rain here now. And yes, the weekend could bring torrential rains.
sheesh, feast or famine! better watch the sumps and downspouts!! it's going to test out my newly dug out front bed, but give very badly needed relief to a lot of my plants.
