Found this little guy in my carrot tops, didn't notice him clinging to the foliage until I was removing the tops. I am in southern Ontario. I have not seen him eat any of the carrot tops I've provided in the bug enclosure he is now in. Any thoughts?
CLOSED: what is this caterpillar?
It's in the family Noctuidae, Melanchra adjuncta, known as the hitched arches - http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/108702087
They reportedly feed on the leaves of a wide variety of herbaceous (including alfalfa, asparagus, bracken, clover, dandelion, goldenrod, plantain, and trefoil) and woody plants (including alder, birch, elder, elm, gooseberry, honeysuckle, and willow).
thank you! That's exactly what it is :-) gave him some dandelion leaves and he is happily munching away now :-)
