Hibiscus

Lincolnton, NC

Hi, I'm new to the site. I have a question about what I believe is a Hibiscus. I saw this growing at the edge of the woods on my property. I was wondering if it would transplant well if I was to move it to a shaded area of the yard. It is approximately 4 feet tall.

Yes, it is a Hibiscus. But Hibiscus are full sun plants. If you move it to shade, it won't bloom.

If you plan to move it anyway, wait until this fall after it stops blooming. Prepare the new spot by digging large enough hole and amending any way you usually do. Cut the Hibiscus back by more than half. Start digging far enough back that you get as much root as possible. Hibiscus don't have tap roots so after you have dug deep enough on the edges, work you shovel under the plant and lift it out.

Agree with all Daisy said except: Conventional wisdom would have you skip amending, and backfilling with whatever came out of the planting hole ...... exception made if you're planting into a very sandy or gravely soil, but anything heavier than sand gravel should not be amended.
