Very small black beetle in kitchen

San Francisco, CA

It seemed like overnight that I suddenly had these tiny black beetles(?) in my kitchen. They were all over the dry goods. Seemed as though ground zero was a plastic bag of garbanzo beans - they had eaten through the bag. They are very small, about 1.5X the size of a tick. They move very slowly and have wings - they attempt to fly but just can't seem to pull it off.

As i was cleaning out the shelves I got so used to them, I started just smashing them with my finger to pick them up. Just one time, it felt as though one might have bitten me a little bit but it might be my imagination.

This is a leaf beetle in the subfamily Bruchinae. They commonly are known as pea or bean weevils, as their larvae develop in whole seeds, especially those in the legume family.
