Some kind of wasp has built a nest in the hollow pole where the old clothesline is in my backyard. I have had trouble getting a photo--I don't want to get too close to the nest, and there are so many different kinds of bees and wasps in my yard right now, and none of them seem to want to sit still for a photo. ;-) But I think this may be one of them.
Is it possible to tell what kind it is from this photo?
CLOSED: What kind of wasp?
What little shown reminds me of a hornet.

Thanks hcmcdole. I:m wondering about that, too. :-(
Not a hornet, but a mason wasp - see https://bugtracks.wordpress.com/2011/12/15/wasp-hotels/ for an example. These wasps are not at all aggressive towards humans.
thanks, Flapdoodle! That's good to know. I think this must not be the wasp that has built the nest then, since it seems that mason wasps are solitary.
