is this a honey bee? or something else?
CLOSED: what kind of bee?
Not a honey bee, but (I think) something in the family Megachilidae, which includes mason and leafcutter bees. Perhaps Flapdoodle can narrow it down.
thanks, Greenthumb! :-)
It is indeed in the family Megachilidae, It looks like one of the wool carder bees in the genus Anthidium - see http://www.cirrusimage.com/bees_Megachilidae_Anthidium.htm for an example.
thanks so much, Flapdoodle! I have been seeing them around my yard this summer, but this is the first time I've been able to capture one in a photo. It's nice to know what it is!!
