Found this spider but have no idea what it is

Portsmouth, United Kingdom

Hi guys,

I've found this spider in my bath and have no idea what it is, I've read a few things on google that it could be a false widow, are these dangerous at all?

Kind regards
Dave

This looks like a male Steatoda grossa, one of the species sometimes called 'false widow' spiders. Also may be known as rabbit hutch or cupboard spiders. The females of some Steatoda species can have quite a painful bite (personal experience). See http://www.uksafari.com/steatodagrossa.htm

Thank you so much for letting me know and confirming this I really appreciate it.

My wife hates spiders and wanted to squish it, but I popped it in a glass and released it.....on orders....half way down my road lol.

Can these spiders kill? Or do they just give a sting/bite? I've read things on google u can be hospitalised?!

Kind regards

David

The danger from these spiders has been greatly overblown in the popular media, especially the likes of the Daily Mail. To the best of anyone's determination, no deaths caused by the bite of these spiders have ever been confirmed. See http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-24636116 for more details.
