Epiphyllum Wilting and turning brown at base.

Van Alstyne, TX

This plant has recently ( May ) bloomed, big red ridiculously gorgeous blooms, and now looks like crap! It seems to be turning brown and crisping up at the base, and I fear it needs help FAST! I've read several other sites advising possible fungal issue. I might mention, it has been on a back porch, indirect light, and our temps have been over 100 degrees for a couple weeks now. As a result I have been faithful to water ~ too much? HELP! The leaves feel soft and wilty.

The roots have died from .... Over watering or under watering. As you increased the amount you are watering when you had the heat wave, I suspect over watering. Dump it out and see how wet the soil is. They need to stay damp but not wet so if you can feel any dampness in the top inch of soil, it doesn't need water.

Mine live in a greenhouse where the temps routinely reach over 100* and the humidity drops to 10%. I don't increase water. As long as the leaves feel hard, it doesn't need water.

At this point, I suggest you take some cuttings and try to root them. Epiphyllum are epiphytes - they grow on another plant (but only use this plant for support). They don't root in soil (terrestrial). The potting soil is to hold them down only. Make it light and fast draining.

Yes, cutting will root easily. My weather is much more moderate but this plant 'thrives on neglect' and can endure drying better than drowning.
