This year we have had record rains and I can't keep up with the weeding. I have two very nice rows of broccoli that have a lot of tall grass (foxtail) in between the plants. I realize the grass is competing with the broccoli but the broccoli looks great so I'm not concerned about that. I'm concerned about the gazillions of seeds that will be coming from the influorescences which are now in full array; I've been pulling the those off instead of pulling out the entire plant because it's harder to pull the whole plant out and the ground is disrupted so badly as a result.
My question: - is pulling the influorescences off an effective means of preventing seeding from foxtail if done early enough. Inherent within this question, is whether there is a time required for maturation of the seeds during which it is safe to just throw them on the nearby ground or do I need to collect them all and dispose of them separately or burn them or what?
garden weeding
The seeds shouldn't mature once they are off the plant. But I would toss them in the garbage just to be on the safe side.
