CLOSED: What variety of skippers?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of skippers these two are?

They appear to be grass skippers (subfamily Hesperiinae). See http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Poanes-zabulon for an example.

thanks, Flapdoodle! Greenthumb and I were thinking maybe the one on the right is a female Zabulon? The one on the left looks a lot like the photos of Least Skipper.

The one on the left may also be a male Zabulon skipper. There is so much similarity among many skippers, and such variability within species that it is difficult to ID with high certainty even with optimal photos, which is probably why Flapdoodle wasn't more specific.

Good point, Greenthumb! :-)

Indeed, Greenthumb. The combination of similar-appearing color patterns among different species in this group and variations within each species can make confident determinations difficult for non-specialists, and I definitely am not a specialist in this group!

Thanks Flapdoodle.

Just wanted to let you know that BAMONA confirmed the sightings for me and Greenthumb you are right--the one on the left is a male Zabulon, and the one on the right is a female Zabulon!! :-)
