Found this little guy dangling from my coffee table. We are up in northern alberta, Fort McMurray to be exact so not sure what types of spiders and indigenous to this area. Anyone know what type of spider this is? More worried for the kids if it's venomous.

This appears to be an orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae) - see http://www.pbase.com/terrythormin/image/63161920 for an example. Like the vast majority of spiders, orb weavers technically are venomous but they are harmless to humans. See the 'sticky' on spider bites at the top of this forum.
