CLOSED: Large flying insect

Very large and black flying insect. A couple of them were hanging around my mountain mints today. Any idea what they are?

Believe it is a solitary wasp, perhaps a Larropsis species. http://bugguide.net/node/view/188775/bgimage

I am thinking, based on its size and color, that maybe it is a Great Black Wasp? They were just about 2" long.

That seems more likely; the head shape of CatMint's specimen appears wrong for Larropsis/Podalonia...

That's why they pay him the big bucks on this site. ;-) At least I got the family correct, my untrained eye does not see significant differences in head shape. Glad Flapdoodle is around to correct and educate, a great service to this forum. Thank You.

I totally agree, Greenthumb! :-)
