yellowing liquidamber help please!

Salt Lake City, UT

I think I messed up the soil for this tree. it was beautifully healthy four days ago when I planted it! this is a Liquidambar slender silhouette about 6 feet tall on the north side of a building but it does get early morning east sun.

it was planted where a cedar tree was removed and I tried to pull out all of the shredded clippings. the extra soil that I used was that vigoro organic potting mix that seems to have some fertilizer already in it. then I threw in a tiny bit of ammonium sulfate 1t maybe. thinking that it would compensate for too much bark or tree mulch mixed in with the dirt. is not water logged, nor does it have dropping leaves. they are just turning yellow by the handful and almost as the hours go by. I guess I need to dig it up and find other soil. Then dig and throw out all soil near planting hole? Any other ideas? Can anyone help? I've been waiting to plant this for weeks. Love it!

Thank you!!

If you just planted this tree 4 days ago, the soil you planted it in has nothing to do with its current situation.

But... as you kept the tree in the pot for weeks before planting, was it root bound? If so, was water penetrating to the middle of the root ball? Did you get the soil in the planting hole thoroughly wet before planting the tree?

It might be that what your tree needs is a good deep soaking to wet the root ball completely and the soil around the root ball. If the soil or the components you added were dry, you could very well of burned the roots on the outside of the root ball. Water deeply and keep the tree moist.

Agree with DaisyPlantLady - water the darn thing thoroughly, and keep moist through the rest of this growing season.

'Slender Silhouette' is such a vigorous grower, it is hard to do anything wrong with it except letting it dry out.

I will try to water it even more. thank you both

Just to give you some hope, these trees do experience some yellowing of inner leaves when they are dry. The same thing happened to mine during a six week period of very little rain. This was from mid-August last year until about the end of September. No worries though. Yours will do fine with water.
