Is this just a typical Flowering or Kousa Dogwood? It looked so compressed I thought it may be some other variety. The leaves' curves are cool too.
Dogwood ID
Definitely Cornus kousa - the fruit perched erect above the foliage is a giveaway at this point in the season.
Cool beans. Thanks!
Nice edible fruit when they ripen in September.

So I was at Coastal Maine Botanical Garden yesterday.
The Cornus kousa's there were labeled Benthamidia.
The bunchberries and redtwig dogwoods were categorized as Swida.
I couldn't find much info on-line as to whether these are newly split off from Cornus?
Or if they're outdated nomenclature?
Or if there are competing taxonomist classifications?

What was your overall impression of this place? We were there last summer and thought it was well worth the entrance fee. It should be very impressive in another 10-20 years. We were told that a group of area citizens raised cash to get it going, with some mortgaging their home to raise cash. I'm not sure if that's true, but it makes for a good story.
I loved the place, but the entrance fee was surprisingly high ($16).
But they honor reciprocal memberships from a bunch of other botanical gardens,
so we got in for free. So I grudgingly quit grousing about the fee...

A few botanists - though not many - split Cornus into 4 or 5 separate smaller genera. They're probably sensible to do so, but it isn't widely accepted yet.

Thanks for info
