This was literally growing in the water at a local lake in Braintree. It was only about 4 or 5 feet high. I love the white spiky fruit. What is this?
Thanks!
Water Tree
One of those native wet-site indicator shrubs...
Cephalanthus occidentalis - Buttonbush.
You think this species belongs on my list of trees or is it always a shrub? What's the difference between a tree and a shrub anyways?
Your opinion.
Buttonbush (as its name indicates) is usually a pretty big sprawling multistem thing. Call it whatever suits you.
In second photo, note the specimen of another indicator species: Mountain dew 'aluminumcannus'. This is an invasive species, and tends to spread rapidly once established!
pistil- Haha!!
Wow, Pistil, it took me a solid minute to figure out what Sally thought was so funny. I even looked back at the pic to see what the other plant looked like but didn't see anything else. Nicely done.
I googled aluminumcannus and saw a pic of Mountain Dew. That's when I figured it out. lol.
Haha...glad I'm not the only goof.
Lol! Notice the gender differences (referring back to another thread)?
;P
