sage plant suffering

Conde sur Vesgre, France

I planted this plant two weeks ago, and have been watering it daily, or almost. We had a heat wave just after I put it in the ground.

Some of the leaves are perky, but about half of the stems have leaves that are either droopy or turning brown or even falling off. It has half the leaves it did when I planted it!! I know these are hot-weather mediterranean plants, but I thought I was "doing right by it", to water it often while it was getting acclimated in its new place. It was in a pot before, and not badly root bound.

Have I overwatered or underwatered?? We also have a kitten who likes to play around there and she could have jumped around on it… Please someone inform me!! Please before I make it worse!

Daily watering is excessive, more suited to aquatic plants than to mediterranean ones! That is almost surely the problem here!
Plants need to be watered in upon planting, then perhaps weekly or biweekly for new plantings, if there's been no rain. Leave it alone and see if it can recover.

It's true that daily watering can be excessive. But for a new transplant in a heat wave, water can be a good thing. I'm in Texas where the temps are 100 degrees F and am out hand watering almost every day. I'm not drowning my transplants, but they all are getting a good drink. I find that if I use the 'mist' setting on my hose, the plants don't get enough water.

Can you test the soil to see if it's dry or not? You can get a moisture meter or just use a pencil. Looking at your picture, your soil looks dry. But it's hard to tell from a picture.

Watch your kitten to see if she's partial to that plant. If she is, try planting some catnip!

Good luck!
