Experience with using seaweed as a mulch/fertilizer?

Natick, MA

I wanted to get some seaweed from the beach and use it as mulch, and ultimately it will fertilize as well, and enhance the soil.

Has anyone had experience doing this and would you recommend washing it off/soaking it for a certain amount of time before putting it in the garden? I dont know if I want to import a bunch of sand fleas or other bugs :0)

Thanks in advance

I think sand fleas will be the least of it. Your yard is going to smell like a rotting beach.

I wondered about that! LOL! Maybe I have to dry some before I use it in the garden?

Am I correct in assuming you mean seaweed from the ocean? I have no experience with that but I have used it from Oneida Lake. It makes a wonderful mulch and breaks down into compost over time. I line my beds with it and put soil on top. Have done it for years. I also used any dead fish that washed ashore as fertilizer.
I guess you could rinse it well and chop it up a bit and try it in a location where if it did smell, it wouldn't be in an area where you'd be sitting.

Mittsy,

Thanks for your input!
Yes, I meant seaweed from the ocean vs. lake. I know others have used this and touted the great nutrients it gives the garden. I will try a little and see how it works. and try Drying it in the sun in and rinse it.

People use fish fertilizer and seaweed "tea" and such for fertilizer, this is just going the "natural"/non processed route.

Hopefully others with experience will post as well, which is always helpful!
