2015 Fall Plant Swap General Discussion Thread

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have a lot of partial shade, but most of it is slightly uphill of the rest of the yard, so it's not especially moist, which I read this plant prefers. I know Terri will have the perfect spot in the beds near her house. Do you know if it's a deer favorite? If not, it'll definitely do well for her.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Critter!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Not sure on the deer thing, I don't have that problem, luckily.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--I did not reply to your request for the Pink Evening Primrose.
Yes! You can have some pots of it. I have plenty.

Here is what the dug up ones look like. They are pretty ugly--to me...
The stems are a bit woody--and they have a overall "brushy" look.
There are a lot of stems with roots on them in each of these pots.

Of course--mind you--the bed they have been growing in is mostly clay
and there are some monster plants nearby--like a HUGE Montauk Daisy plant.

A lot of plants look pretty tattered by this time of the year! They'll grow more roots and recover nicely over winter, I'm sure.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Muddy, could I please try your Praetia 'Celestial Spice' for our fairy garden? Also, if you have enough to go around, I'd like to try creeping St John's Wort again... I bought a big pot of it last year and apparently planted it in a poor location, thinking it needed some shade. I'll try it again in the back border, making sure to give it an anemded planting mound for good drainage, or maybe put it in a bottomless container with potting mix.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Sure, critter, I have plenty of both.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks!

If anybody needs groundcovers, I can pull you some variegated vinca, sedum (little chartreuse leaves), snow on the mountain... all very vigorous, fair warning!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Who was it that had plain green leaved liriope? I'd like some if any is available.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Me me me... please, come dig up all the liriope you want! Maybe you & SSG can find a good date (after the swap... and if you wait until after first frost you won't have to contend with the skeeters), and we'll make an occasion of it.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sure, Jill, we'll work something out!

Coleup, I got you down for the items you requested.

Milkweed... Hm, I don't know what kind to request. What do you recommend? I'd prefer pretty much anything *except* for the one that's know to be aggressive.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ssg tropical milkweed is my workhorse right now, dark green and sturdy, blooms are intense, but not especially large. I do have it in a hot bed (full sun, south) Swamp milkweed has gotten all yellow and sick looking. The one you DO NOT want is common which is species syriaca.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

My 4 Tropical MW's coleup gave me recently are doing great--
except for the orange Aphids. One of the 4 has bloom buds starting. Late--I know--
the other 3 starts are growing--but no blooms yet.

My Swamp MW finally grew big and bloomed this summer--after 3 years!

I had cats on both of them.

1--Tropical
2--Swamp MW in June

Critter, I'm not sure Phlox likes my garden, but I like it, so could I have some more Felicia's Phlox please? What is its ideal growing condition?

Damascus, MD

I'm collecting seeds from our Yucca plant and will bring them in case anyone is interested. I've been trying to get them to grow from seed, but alas no luck. I would much appreciate instructions, help, magic wand... to make this happen. Cheers, /tn

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Phlox likes full sun, but it will grow in partial shade... my MIL has part to full shade in her yard, but she still gets "Felicia's Phlox" popping up here and there. I have a clump in the north-facing front foundation bed, and it gets about 4 feet high and multiplies well enough to provide starts to share. In back, in full sun, it has reaches heights of 6 feet or more. I'll dig some!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I think I have "Felicia's Phlox" in full sun, but it got some sort of disease. It's hanging in there, but not looking good. I think it got too much rain this spring/early Summer.

thamng, do you know what kind of Yucca it is, or do you have photos?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

All the rain has not been kind to any of my phlox... they are prone to powdery mildew... those of mine that don't look "powdery" are sort of yellow now. Phlox definitely needs some "shoes and socks" plants in front of it, to hide the often-ugly foliage. But the blooms were wonderful this year!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My Felicias is beautiful all the way to its toes. Being in the erstwhile vegetable garden gone too shady, it's got some nice soil.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

mine is getting pretty so-so....Not much color left....

A while ago--I cut it back hoping to get new growth and new blooms.
maybe that was not a good idea....but then, summer isn't over yet.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have 2 divisions potted and available of my Pulmonaria.
The one with spotted leaves and blue flowers.
1st come...... G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

David and I would love to have one of them, Gita. Thanks.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

BOY! You are fast!!!! I just put them on my "haves" and I already have a taker.

You got it, Pat! g.

Frederick, MD

Gita, I'll take the second off your hands unless someone replies before I'm able to hit "send". LOL

THANKS !!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

You got it--Cam! It is fairly small--but rooted and growing.
I dug it out of a bed to "rescue" it from "dry death".
They are quite hardy and grow well in no time at all.

G.

Frederick, MD

Thanks... I have a good spot for it. Will get some filtered sun/shade during the hot afternoons under my Cherry Tree.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha! Had I seen this post earlier, I woul have taken one too. Pulmonaria are pretty great.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Lisa--

I will put you down for both the DV Az.--and the Mouse Ear Hosta.
I have enough of both to gove you more than one---
How many would you like?

As you know--both of these are left outside for the winter. You can shelter
them a bit with some dried leaves or against your S. side of the house.
The DV is rooted--since Spring--but still needs some TLC.

Hey Buds, Going to Lewes this week. Plan to include Milton excursion to Peppers, Lavender Fields and Dogfish brewery.
Opinions on Peppers, Lavender?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I haven't been. With restaurants I look at Yelp; with nurseries I'd go and see for myself.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

If anyone is interested. my local HD has the following plants in gallon pots reduced to $4 I am willing to purchase for you and bring to Swap. Let me know asap as I will be back there this afternoon or tomorrow am. Judy

Russian Sage

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

add a noid Columbine, clump of local blue eyed grass Sisyrinchium and a native wood poppy Stylophorum to my haves

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Lisa I'll try to bring some creeping Phlox. I will be moving a patch of pink. Is pink OK/ of interest? I have trouble getting it to live in pots. Maybe fall will work better than spring.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah I wonder if any of the phlox I gave away at the spring swap made it. I think Gita and Catbird got it from me.

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Seq, the phlox you gave me is still living, in its temporary bed, it will belittle in its final place in the spring.

Coleup, which HD were you at, Forest Dr or the big one?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Catbird, I was at the big HD.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh good, glad to hear it's still living. I'll probably have some more in the spring if you want it. I'm going to remove another pot or two worth.

Washington, DC

Hey Sallyg, creepingphlox in any color is fab.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--

The creeping Phlox I got from you was not in the best shape--all dry..No green on it...

I eventually planted it..somewhere...??? Maybe in my front, corner bed.
Have to now wait until spring to see if anything grew out of it...
Nothing looks alive at this point. Neither does David's Korean Rock fern...:o(

One of the 4-cell packs of the seedling BES's also bit the dust.
Either too much rain or not enough. I want to dig up some individual, large starts from-seed
for you. They are coming up all over. Seriously---I am going to pull most of them and trash it.
They DO take over--and obliterate anything else planted in the beds.

Getting to crunch time!!! Lots to tag and pot and organize.....AAARRGGHHHHH!
I always think I have nothing to give away--and then i am deluged with requests....

One of the Pulmonaria starts is looking pretty sad--only 2 leaves left on it. Think positive!
Again--I think they got too much water... Mantra--"It will grow! It will grow!!! It will be OK!

g.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah I wasn't too sure about those carpet phlox. I'm glad at least they are working out for Catbird.
