2015 Fall Plant Swap General Discussion Thread

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Sally. Yes, please! I do not have the 'Bristol's Goose Egg' any more. I was hoping that I might get a baby plant or a leaf from you or Holly at some point.

Gita, thank you for offering the white strep. I think I am good for now.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally I have a new found dedication to my Sf free eps now.. haha see what Spell suggestions did with Strep! I will take good care now. Just may have to give you both if I am no longer sure which is which.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, the 'Ruby' is the one with huge long leaves. The 'Goose Egg' has shorter leaves with slightly (relatively speaking) rounded leaf tips.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Hardy Ageratum, Blue mist flower , Conoclinium coelestinum

Critter, This is a good 'filler'flower' and will weave itself around BES, Cones and other sturdy tall (prarie type) flowers as well as underplant or skirt some shrubs, even amongst daylilies as it comes into its own after they bloom. It's very like mints that form that spreading tangle of runners, so pieces or clumps can just be broken off for new plants, It is a late starter (about now) to flower but the blue is just right. If it starts to look 'ratty' just cut it back.

I grow mine in containers so 'sinking a pot 'of it would work to contain outward spread in a try it place. Each spring I can divide up container for 5-6 gods size plugs. Whether in sun or shade I find I need a good bunch of it to make a blue statement. As a blooms til frost plant it is valuable for our pollinators along with asters and goldenrods, when everything looks a lot less formal anyway!

Just my 2cents Judy.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

thanks! I like the idea of planting it with daylilies (and daffodils)... I've tried adding agastache for mid-late summer blooms, but I don't seem to have good luck overwintering them (insufficient drainage, maybe).

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Ditto what coleup said about Mistflowers, except that mine have been blooming for about 3 weeks.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I started seeing the first bit of blue 2-3 weeks ago too, my first confirmation that they WERE blue mistflower. Just a few here and there so far.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah, nice writeup Coleup. In your experience, does it 'choke out' other plants or just grow around them?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Not sure if these are the same--but Karen gave me some seeds 2 years ago
to Tall Ageratum. I WS them and planted a couple of them and they grew nicely.
I could say they grew about 2' tall--and branched out quite a bit...just nicely.

You have seen this picture before--but I will post it again.
Would you say these are "Mistflowers" or just tall Ageratum? thanks...g.

Those are not the same Gita. I remember hers from a couple years ago and they are very pretty. They look great with your Wasabi Coleus.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have divided my "Bowl" of Mouse Ear Hosta and have 9 divisions planted in pots.
Will post it on my "Haves" asap.

1--The Mama Bowl
2--The 9 divisions potted up. Hard to believe they all came from the one pot!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

thanks for dividing that, Gita! That's one sweet little hosta that everybody should try. I have some, from you and/or from Holly, and I love it. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, Jill--it is cute!
I have another whole pot I am keeping--just tore apart one of them...:o)

Anyone interested in asst. begonias? Been cutting mine back and potting them up.
They grow so fast!

Cam--you gonna put up a Food Thread soon?

Have any preferences? Let us know....
Now--do you all want my home made pickles again? Don't want to overdo it
if there is no interest....I am picking some home-grown Cukes.
Need a bunch more to make a couple jars-full. LMK.

Frederick, MD

6 weeks out... is it time for the food thread ? If so, I'll get to it soon. :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

SSG, I have some Lamium for you both Silver Beacon and Yellow Archangel

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Muddy, may I have some of your pratia please.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Muddy, I'd like some of your Ostrich Fern and Solomon's Seal if possible. Thanks!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes, I'll put you both down!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Holly!

Muddy, I'd love some Pratia 'Celestial Spice' and Creeping St. John's Wort!

Critter, I'm still holding onto the asters for you.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Sure, ssg; I've got you down!

Sequoia, I don't really need more Mistflower, so now that you have other takers you can take me off the list and give more to others...I just didn't want to see it get thrown out!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I haven't found the right place for St John's Wort, apparently, as I've lost it over winter a couple of times now (and I don't think it's borderline hardy or anything)... where do you all grow yours?

Muddy, the little green J. maple seedlings I have from you at the spring swap are coming along... not all made it of course, but those that did are probably ready for bigger pots (quarts, maybe... they are still not very big!).

SSG, I'm looking forward to the asters, thanks!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

My St. John's Wort is growing at the top of the hill in my back yard in what I'd say is an exposed, full sun, fairly dry area.

I'm glad that some of the Japanese Maple seedlings survived.

Thanks... in trying to pamper mine with summer moisture, I might have put them in places that stayed too wet in winter.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

You're welcome! They do seem to thrive on neglect. Mine only get watered when I want to turn the sprinkler on for something else.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cam--
Here is the pitiful stems of the NE Aster i dug up for you.
They are quite fragile/dry/slightly woody--so some broke off.

BUT--#2--look at all the new growth coming up from the base?
You will have an Aster in your garden, for sure.

I just marked off and sprayed the areas on the sides of my driveway for new beds, Gita. I have some ideas of what I want to put in those beds but plenty of room for some NE Aster so bring it on. Thanks ! :)

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

CAM, how many NE Aster could you use? I have 13 in pots of various sizes.

Frederick, MD

They get about 4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide in our zone, right ? I could use 3 of them, Muddy.

Thank you !

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

That width sounds about right, CAM, and my established NE Asters are about 4' tall right now. They get much taller than that if you don't pinch them back, though. I pinched mine back once a few months ago. I'll put you down for some.

Frederick, MD

Sounds good, Muddy. Thanks again !

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Would like to hear if anyone is interested in the Mouse Ear Hosta I just divided.
It blooms beautifully. I have 9- 6" pots of divisions...see pic.

G - I'm interested in the Mouse Ear hosta!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, you won't have trouble finding homes for those cuties! I figure the one I have in front will hopefully be big enough to split next year (so I can move a couple pieces to the back garden), but if you have an extra for Martina or Theresa, I'd gladly speak up on their behalf.

I have some extra starts of Woodland Phlox (the short kind) from Theresa's garden; we're pretty sure it's 'Blue Moon'. I took home a bunch when I helped her weed a bed earlier this summer. When it's happy, it apparently seeds around a bit! I planted pieces around my new shade garden area, and I potted up half a dozen that have grown on pretty well now.

I'll call ADR next week and see what bulbs will be in by swap time... I'm guessing it'll be everything except amaryllises. In my copious (hah) free time once school starts, I'll get invoices out for people who participated in the group buy.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I'd love some 'Blue Moon' woodland phlox!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, if you have any extra, I'd really love some, too! :-)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

And some for mee toooo pretty please

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--
I have 9 divisions of the Mouse Ear Hosta--so no problem sharing...
I will tag one for Martina.

Terri--one or two for you as well.... Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)
